Salima Subramanian - CEO of Serenity Studio Scalp & Skin - Frisco Women Smash Blog Interview

Hi Name thank you for joining Frisco Women today for this interview! Let’s get started by telling our readers about yourself and your background!

I was born and raised in Spartanburg, South Carolina, and at 16, I moved to Atlanta, where my life really began to change. I got married at 22, had my first child at 23, and after going through a divorce, I made the move to Texas for a fresh start after dating my current husband who became my best friend and soulmate, (who treated my older daughter like a princess and still does) and we got married when I was 31 and had my second child at 32.

We have two beautiful daughters, and I couldn’t be more grateful for the life we’ve built together. I didn’t attend hair school until I was 35, but from the moment I started, I knew I’d found my passion. I worked in a salon as an assistant/ stylist for 2 years. Eight years ago, I opened my own salon suite, something my dad always said was meant to be. Even though he’s no longer here, I feel his presence watching over me as I continue to grow and expand my business.

Two years ago, I launched my Headspa scalp treatments after dealing with my own hair issues, and it has completely transformed my business. Now, I’m excited to be expanding even further and introducing new services for my clients. Frisco, Texas, is where I call home now, and I love being part of this vibrant community. I’m so proud of what I’ve built here, both personally and professionally.

Thank you for sharing! We love our members and are always curious about how they came to us; when and how did you find out about Frisco Women?

I don’t remember. But I do love the group as there is so much information and knowledge to gain from others.

That’s awesome. Can you tell us a little about your business? We’d love to know how you got started, and where you’ve grown to today!

My business of Serenity Studio began eight years ago when I opened my own salon suite. At the time, I was excited but also faced a lot of challenges. Money was tight, and I was nervous about finding clients and gaining their trust. Starting something from the ground up is never easy, but I was determined to make it work. My dad had always encouraged me, saying that opening my salon was meant to be, and I kept his words close to my heart as I navigated those early days.

One of the biggest obstacles I had to overcome was earning enough to keep things running. I remember the days when I’d have gaps between appointments, wondering if I’d ever have a steady stream of clients. But I stayed focused on providing personalized care, especially when it came to the natural scalp treatments I was passionate about. Little by little, word spread, and my clientele started to grow.

Another challenge was earning my clients’ trust. Scalp health and hair loss can be sensitive topics, and I knew I needed to create a space where people felt safe and cared for. Over time, my reputation for offering natural, holistic treatments grew, and I began to build lasting relationships with my clients.

Two years ago, I started offering Headspa scalp treatments after experiencing my own hair issues. That shift was a game changer for my business. By turning a personal obstacle into an opportunity to help others, my business not only survived but thrived. Today, I’m excited to be expanding my services even more and continuing to grow in new directions.

Looking back, I’m grateful for those challenges because they’ve made me and my business stronger. I know I’ve built something meaningful, and I’m excited for what’s next for my current clients as well as new ones!!

Do you have any advice for our readers?

If I could offer any advice, it would be to trust the process and stay consistent. Starting a business is never easy, and there will be moments where you question everything. I certainly had those moments when money was tight and clients were few. But one thing I’ve learned is that persistence really does pay off.

Trust yourself and trust your instincts. You know more than you think you do. When it comes to pricing your services, charge your worth. Don’t undersell yourself because of fear or insecurity—it all starts there. Once you recognize the value you bring, others will too.

In business, relationships are everything. Build genuine connections with your clients, focus on their needs, and offer a personal touch in everything you do. People can tell when you care, and that’s what builds trust over time. It’s not always about having the fanciest equipment or the biggest marketing budget—it’s about showing up authentically and offering something of real value.

Another is to embrace your obstacles. When I started my Serenity Studio Headspa treatments, it came from dealing with my own hair issues. What felt like a problem turned into an opportunity, and it completely changed the direction of my business for the better. So don’t be afraid to turn your struggles into your strengths.

Surround yourself with a supportive network, both personally and professionally. Whether it’s mentors, family, or like-minded business owners, having people who encourage you and believe in you makes all the difference. In my case, my dad was a huge inspiration, and now, I’m lucky to have a strong support system at home and in my community. Thank you to all who have stood by me!! That’s the way to embrace it.

Remember: success takes time, but if you stay focused, work hard, and keep believing in yourself, you’ll get there!!

Now just for fun, what are your local favorites? We always like knowing about people’s favorite restaurants, dishes, drinks, etc!

When it comes to food and drinks, I definitely have my go-tos! For Italian, I’m a huge fan of pasta and pizza—there’s just something so comforting about a good plate of either. Taverna - Penne pasta pomodoro spicy and expresso martini & North Italia - Spicy Rigatoni Vodka with pino noir wine. If I’m craving Mexican food, you’ll likely find me ordering cheese or veggie enchiladas, which never disappoint. La Hacienda Ranch- cheese enchiladas or Salsa Tex-Mex - cheese and onion enchiladas and spinach enchiladas with spicy queso sauce.

For drinks, I love a good espresso martini when I’m in the mood for something classy, but I also enjoy a classic Coke and rum. And to top it all off? Chocolate cake is my ultimate dessert indulgence! Bar Louie - queso nachos with wild berry martini and  decadent chocolate cake.

Do you know of any best kept secrets ? Something you wish more people knew about?

One thing I wish more people knew is how important scalp health is for healthy hair. Focusing on your scalp can make a huge difference, even more than the products you use on your hair. Also, trust yourself and charge your worth. It’s amazing how things change when you know your value!
